The Perils and Pitfalls of Research

Larry Bennett’s first book about the Highbridge Radio Station (Portishead Radio – A Friendly Voice on Many a Dark Night) was published in 2020, and his second book about the UK’s Coast Radio Station service (All Ships, All Ships) followed in 2021. Both became Amazon best-sellers in their genre.

His current projects include compiling and researching his Grandmother’s memoirs about growing up in Bristol in the early 1900s, including stories of her wider family. This will include family photographs, family memories and details of family tragedies. He is also researching a history of the Bridgwater Beam Wireless Station which used to be located at Huntworth, near North Petherton.

His talk will include lessons learnt during research for his two published books, as well as some useful hints to follow during the research process. There are always issues with regard to accuracy of source data for non-fiction or historical books, and hopefully the talk will help in avoiding some of the more common pitfalls of such research. There will also be time for questions at the end of the talk.

He lives locally in Burnham-on-Sea with partner Wendy, and enjoys amateur radio, amateur dramatics, music, family history, model railways, and following his beloved Bristol Rovers Football Club.
